The Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones announced before the season that he'll retire from baseball at the end of the 2012 season.
Chipper Jones On Disabled List Again
The Braves’ third baseman suffered a leg contusion a week ago, and now will take two more weeks off.
He began the year on the DL after arthroscopic surgery during spring training. When he finally did make his season debut, he got off to a great start, but then suffered a contusion on his leg last Friday in Tampa Bay. That will put him on the DL for the second time this season. Chris Vivlamore:
The Braves placed third baseman Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a left leg contusion following Friday’s game against the Nationals. The move is retroactive to Wednesday when Jones pinch-hit, his only appearance in the past seven games since suffering the injury in Tampa Bay on May 18th.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said the Braves will call up a catcher to replace Jones on the roster. The team will announce the player Saturday. They are in need of a catcher after backup David Ross suffered a right groin strain during a second-inning at-bat Friday and is day-to-day. Ross started the past four games for Brian McCann, who was out with flu-like symptoms.
Vivlamore says the Braves could call up catcher J.C. Boscan from Triple-A Gwinnett. In Jones' absence, Juan Francisco or Martin Prado will likely play third base.
Jones is having a fine year, too, hitting .307/.377/.485 with five home runs and 24 RBI in 29 games; the article indicates it could take a bit longer than the 15-day disabled list period for Jones to be ready to return to action.
