During the Brewers' Saturday afternoon game against the Giants at San Francisco, their shortstop Alex Gonzalez made a hard slide in the second inning and was injured. Brewers beat writer Tom Haudricourt describes what happened:

The Brewers are having one of the worst injury-filled road trips I can remember. After Alex Gonzalez singles in a run, he steals second but turns his right ankle badly on the bag and has to be helped off the field. Either a bad ankle or knee injury, it appeared. Stay tuned.

It's the fourth consecutive game in which a Brewers player exited with an injury -- Mat Gamel (ACL tear), Ryan Braun (inflamed Achilles tendon), Carlos Gomez (hamstring strain) and now Gonzalez.

It turned out to be a knee:

The Brewers just announced that shortstop Alex Gonzalez has a right knee injury, the result of that hard slide into second base in the second inning. Gonzalez is going for an MRI, which means there is a suspicion of a structural injury. Doesn’t sound good for player or club.

Cesar Izturis took Gonzalez's place in the lineup, but it's unlikely the Brewers would want to go long-term with Izturis as the starter if Gonzalez is out for an extended period.
