Guillermo Mota Appeals 100-Game Suspension

Guillermo Mota says his positive PED test was due to taking his child’s cough medicine, and he is appealing his suspension.

Giants reliever Guillermo Mota received a 100-game suspension from MLB on Monday for being a second-time offender of baseball's PED policy; he reportedly had a positive test for a drug called Clenbuterol.

Mota is appealing this suspension, claiming the positive test was due to his kid’s cough medicine:

“Players are responsible for what they put in their bodies. Guillermo understands that,” agent Adam Katz said. “A 100-game suspension for taking a children’s cough medicine that contains trace amounts of a prohibited substance, which is what happened here, is severe and unfair and does not reflect the intention of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. We will appeal it.”

While this appeal is going on, Mota will be on the restricted list; the Giants activated Aubrey Huff from the 15-day disabled list to take his roster spot. According to the CSN Bay Area link above:

Mota served a 50-game suspension in 2006 with the New York Mets. Multiple offenders cannot delay their sentence while appealing it, major league officials said.

So appeal or not, Mota is likely to be out a while. No timetable is set for any appeal as of now.
