From 2004 through 2010, left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez struck out 10.8 batters for every nine innings he pitched. He also did a decent job of keeping the ball in the park, allowing just 19 home runs in 297 innings, which kept his ERA low (2.55). He was pretty good not that long ago. Last year he had decent numbers between Baltimore and Texas, even pitching in a World Series.

For Texas. Just to clarify.

But Gonzalez had offseason knee surgery, which didn't make him especially attractive to suitors this winter. After turning down a minor-league offer from the Rangers, he was sort of a forgotten man. No longer:

Viera would be the Nationals' extended spring-training camp, and Gonzalez will start there and work with pitching coach Spin Williams. In other news, Spin Williams is still the greatest name in pitching-coach history.
