The Kansas City Royals needed starting pitching, and they had an extra outfielder. So they made something of a challenge trade, shipping off Melky Cabrera for Jonathan Sanchez. Both had one year before free agency, and they cost about the same. There was some untapped potential there, so it was a decent idea, right?

Sanchez spent over a month on the DL last season with biceps tendinitis, coming back and immediately suffering an ankle sprain.
Vin Mazzaro is on the Royals' current roster, and he's likely to get a spot start or two in Sanchez's absence, though the Royals haven't announced that yet.
