Juan Rivera DL’d, Dodgers Call Up Scott Van Slyke

The Dodgers lost an outfielder to the DL, and called up a minor leaguer with a familiar last name to replace him on the roster.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Juan Rivera left Tuesday's game with a leg problem:

Rivera was removed from the game after sliding into third on Uribe’s bunt after he experienced numbness in the back of his left knee on that slide. After the game, Rivera said he felt a pins-and-needles type sensation and that the medical staff had attributed it to something in a nerve. He is expected to have an MRI exam Wednesday. The MRI must have shown something more than just pins and needles, because:

That would also explain this:

If that name sounds familiar to you, it should; Scott's dad, Andy Van Slyke, was a longtime outfielder in the major leagues, mostly with the Cardinals and Pirates, in the 1980s and 1990s. The elder Van Slyke hit 164 career home runs and might also be remembered for the vacant look in his eyes as he sat in the outfield after the Pirates' stunning loss in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS to the Braves.

That’s the last Pirates team to have a winning record.

Sorry, got distracted. This is about Andy’s son, who has been in the Dodgers organization since 2005; he’ll be making his major-league debut when he appears in a game. Good luck to him.
