Mike Carp Returns To Disabled List

Mariners outfielder Mike Carp’s shoulder is acting up again, and so he’s going on the disabled list, again.

In 2011, Mike Carp came out of the minors and slugged .466 for a Mariners team with a miserable offense. That performance allowed Carp to enter the 2012 season as the Mariners' starting left fielder, and in the first game of 2012 as the Mariners' starting left fielder, Carp injured his shoulder attempting a dive and wound up on the disabled list.

Carp came back, and he showed some power again, but then shoulder discomfort returned. Lately, it seems to have gotten worse, so Carp is headed for the disabled list once more.

Carp has batted just .157 over 98 plate appearances, and one wonders what effect a trick shoulder might've had. Maybe a big one, maybe a little one, maybe no effect at all. His isolated slugging percentage is a healthier .180. In any case, Carp's departure paves the way for Franklin Gutierrez to join the Mariners, finally, and if Gutierrez hits well, Carp might have to fight for playing time when he's healthy. Michael Saunders has come out of nowhere to be the best hitter on the team, and Gutierrez is expected to push Saunders from center field to left.
