In one of the early Wednesday games, Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey pitched a one-hitter, with the one hit a first-inning grounder that might not have been a hit if third baseman David Wright had been able to make a bare-handed pickup.

In one of the late Wednesday games, Giants right-hander Matt Cain has pitched six perfect innings against the Houston Astros.

And he's working with an awfully big cushion. The Giants knocked out Houston starter J.A. Happ in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs in the process. And Gregor Blanco made it 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth with a long, high fly ball that carried the right-field wall for a two-run homer.

Cain’s pitch count might come into play at some point. Thanks to 11 strikeouts -- just one short of his career high, already -- Cain’s thrown 86 pitches in his six innings, and might need to be just a bit more economical if he’s going to throw a complete game. Of course, if he gives up just one baserunner, the bullpen will likely be called upon to finish up this would-be laugher.
