Drew Stubbs On DL With Oblique Strain

Reds outfielder Drew Stubbs avoided the disabled list for a while as he tried to recover from a strained oblique, but he couldn’t avoid the DL forever.

The last time Reds outfielder Drew Stubbs played was June 5. He went 0-for-2 and drew a pair of walks. He was removed with discomfort under his ribs, and was day-to-day with something Dusty Baker insisted wasn’t a strained oblique. It turned out to be a strained oblique, although for a while Stubbs remained day-to-day. Nobody felt that a DL stint would be necessary, until it was.

Stubbs is now on the disabled list, retroactively:

Stubbs will be eligible to return to the Reds next weekend, and maybe he will. It’s hard to recover that quickly from an oblique strain, but Stubbs’ would appear to be rather mild.

The center fielder owns a 79 OPS+ in 226 trips to the plate. Chris Heisey has manned center so far in Stubbs’ absence, and will continue to do so unless something terrible happens to him.
