College World Series 2012: Arizona Tops Florida State

Arizona struck first, but still needed 12 innings to beat Florida State 4-3 in the opening round of the College World Series Friday night.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the third inning and took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before Florida State scored twice to tie it. The teams matched zeroes until Arizona’s Johnny Field doubled in a run in the top of the 12th. Mathew Troupe picked up the win for the Wildcats as he pitched the final 2.2 innings.

Sherman Johnson hit a solo home run for Florida State and John Holland drove in two runs to lead the Seminoles. Florida State will now face Stony Brook in an elimination game on Sunday. Arizona will advance to play Pac-12 foe UCLA in the winners bracket. UCLA won two of the three meetings between the teams this season.
