2012 College World Series: South Carolina Tops Sloppy Florida, 7-3

Florida came into the 2012 College World Series looking like the nation’s top team, holding the country’s top ranking, and possessing the NCAA Tournament’s top overall seed. Unfortunately for the Gators, South Carolina is still the top team in Omaha, and the Gamecocks got their 12th straight College World Series victory in a 7-3 triumph over Florida.

South Carolina ace Michael Roth had his worst outing ever in Omaha and gave up just three earned runs in 6.1 innings of work, two of them on a double that eluded Tanner English in left field. And the Gamecocks broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, touching up Florida starter Brian Johnson for all of those runs.

Florida got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but could do no more, and South Carolina would add two runs in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and an error; two of the Gators’ three errors on the night came in that frame.

South Carolina moves on to play Arkansas in a matchup of winners on Monday. Florida will meet Kent State in an elimination game.
