Monday night, Angels right-hander Jerome Williams started against the San Francisco Giants, the franchise that drafted him in 1999 and brought him to the majors in 2003.

Williams didn’t pitch well, and was knocked out of the game in the fourth inning. Then things got worse, as reported by MLB.com:

Angels starter Jerome Williams was taken to a local hospital after his start Monday, due to what the team believes was a shortness of breath.

The Angels haven’t spoken to doctors yet, but believe the 30-year-old right-hander was having trouble breathing after coming into the clubhouse.

The initial reports suggest that while paramedics did attend to Williams in the clubhouse, taking him to the hospital was essentially a precautionary move, as nothing seriously wrong was discovered at the ballpark.

Williams has been a nice surprise for the Angels, going 6-4 with a 4.20 ERA before Monday’s outing. When Williams records his next victory, he’ll be a seven-game winner for the first time since 2004, when he went 10-7 for the Giants.
