Wang Out Of Nats’ Rotation, Detwiler Back In

Well, that didn’t last long.

This spring, Ross Detwiler beat out John Lannan for the last spot in the Nationals' rotation, and Lannan -- much to his consternation -- got sent to the minors, where he remains (with a 4.91 ERA).

Through nine starts, Detwiler had pitched pretty well, including a 3.88 ERA. But his good numbers were due to early success; in starts seven, eight and nine, Detwiler’s ERA was 8.16 and the Nationals were fortunate to win two of those games.

So with Chien-Ming Wang coming off the Disabled List, Detwiler was exiled to the bullpen. That news "was not received pleasantly". But Detwiler adjusted well to life as a reliever; in 13⅓ relief innings, he gave up only two runs (both on solo home runs).

Meanwhile, Wang’s been terrible as a starter: 6.62 ERA and more walks than strikeouts in his four starts, including another lousy outing Tuesday night.

So now things are going back the way they were. And considering the Nationals supposedly made the move in the first place because Wang’s not well-suited to relief work, his days on the roster might be numbered.
