The Royals didn't trade for Paulino; they bought him. They gave the Rockies a little cash and suddenly discovered they had a good starter worth including in their future plans.
Felipe Paulino: Torn UCL Might End Season
Felipe Paulino was the Royals’ most effective starter, but he’ll likely miss at least a year with a torn UCL.

Paulino is going to get a second opinion, but this likely means Tommy John surgery, which puts him out until at least the middle of next season. Paulino had already missed over a month with a forearm strain, but in the seven starts he did make for the Royals, he was easily their most effective starter, posting a 1.67 ERA and striking out 39 in 37 innings.
