Just hours after the 2012 NHL Draft came to a close on Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs pulled off a blockbuster deal. The Flyers agreed to send James van Riemsdyk to Toronto in exchange for Luke Schenn. The Flyers were seeking help along with blue line and found a suitable trade partner in Schenn and the Leafs, who were looking to bolster their offense. TSN's Bob McKenzie first reported the deal:

Both players have been the topic of trade rumors recently, and Toronto GM Brian Burke reportedly coveted van Riemsdyk for some time. Schenn will join his brother, Brayden, in Philadelphia -- a scenario that Flyers GM Paul Holmgren had also had his sights set on. Schenn and van Riemsdyk are sort of in the same boat. They’ve been a bit underwhelming over the last few years and each gets a fresh start thanks to this trade. Schenn has a ton of potential -- top pair, shutdown defenseman potential -- but there’s still plenty of room to grow for him. The same exact thing can be said of JvR though, of course.
