Twins Sign Ryan Doumit To 2-Year Extension

The Minnesota Twins have signed Ryan Doumit to a two-year contract extension worth a total of $7 million. That kicks in after 2012 is over.

The Minnesota Twins have the worst record in the American League, and a big part of that has been ... not the offense, actually, which has been below average, but not exceedingly so. It's the run prevention that's been the far bigger disaster. But they've had productive bats and unproductive bats, and among the productive bats has been catcher/everything Ryan Doumit. Doumit's batted 229 times, and he's posted a 114 OPS+.

The Twins are fond of productivity like that from versatile players, so Friday they’ve given Doumit a reward:

If you're feeling cynical, you could call this a punishment, since now Doumit is committed to the Twins, but remember that Doumit has to sign off on any contract, or at least someone has to forge his signature really well. In the way that Jon Lieber just felt like a Twin, even though he was never a Twin, Ryan Doumit feels like a Twin, so this is a perfectly suitable relationship.

Last November, the Twins signed Doumit to a one-year contract worth $3 million, so now he gets a bit of a raise through 2013 and 2014. The 31-year-old has not stolen a base since 2010, but he does have two triples over the same period of time. Now you know those facts about Ryan Doumit even though there’s no reason to.
