Orioles Reportedly Acquire Jim Thome

The Baltimore Orioles acquired a power bat for the middle of their lineup, picking up Jim Thome from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for A-baller Kyle Simon.

The Baltimore Orioles acquired Jim Thome from the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, according to Ken Rosenthal, adding a left-handed DH to put in the middle of their batting order and giving everyone a reason to dig through The Dugout's archives. As if you needed a reason.

The Phillies will receive Kyle Simon in the deal, according to Jon Heyman.

Thome was initially signed to give the Phillies some depth at first base and provide power off the bench, but he struggled in a bench role. During interleague play, though, he thrived as the Phillies' designated hitter. With Ryan Howard coming back in the next three weeks, it was clear that it was in the best interests of everyone to deal Thome to an American League team.

The Orioles haven't had a set DH for the year, shuffling Mark Reynolds, Chris Davis, and Nick Johnson in and out of the spot. With Johnson out with an injury -- no, really -- the Orioles have an opening on the roster.

Thome, 41, is hitting .242/.338/.516 with five home runs in 62 at-bats this season.
