There are inherit risks for marginal prospects entering the NFL Draft. This year, a record number 65 non-seniors chose to enter the draft but about a third of them went undrafted.
Eagles rookie Brandon Washington would have returned to school instead of being 6th round pick
Former Miami offensive tackle Brandon Washington had to wait until the sixth round to hear his named called by the Philadelphia Eagles. Still, had he known he was going to wait that long, Washington would have stayed in school.
“If I knew I was going to be drafted that low, I would’ve stayed in school,” Washington told CSN Philly. “It was disappointing. I mean, I know I’m a better player than that.”
Some (including dopes like me) thought Washington would be a good choice in the second or third round of the draft. Washington was even told he could be a second-round pick. The thought was that Washington would move back to guard after playing 2011 at tackle. He was clearly out of place on the outside, but at times dominant at guard in 2010.
As writer Ray Didinger speculates, though, maybe teams didn't know where to slot Washington due to his positional uncertainty. As a result of going in the sixth round, Washington received a four-year, $2.19 million contract. Contrast that with second-round pick Amini Silatolu, who received a four-year, $4.93 million contract.
