Aaron Murray 2013 NFL Draft prospect notes

Aaron Murray | Quarterback | Georgia | 6'1, 211 poounds

Games watched: Auburn, LSU, South Carolina, Michigan State, Florida, Georgia Tech

First word: Murray sparkled at times last season — particularly against Auburn, South Carolina Georgia Tech — but has been inconsistent. Against LSU and Florida, Murray completed less than 45 percent of his passes in 2011. He's known as a hard worker in the film room and has the natural physical skills for the NFL. Most will look at Murray's size and question his upside. But his release point is good and he's probably as tough as any player in the nation.

Positives:

• Murray gets the ball off fast with a compact, consistent motion. From a throwing standpoint, Murray's technique ready for the NFL.

• Uses a really nice pump fake to deceive defensive backs. Is advanced in his ability to manipulate the secondary with his eyes. This shows his on-field intelligence and preparation leading up to the game.

• Spins a nice football on throws to all areas of the field. Murray may not have a 70-yard cannon arm, but his strength is good to zip good throws consistently. Gets excellent placement on his deep passes and throws a catchable ball.

• Is regarded as having excellent character and leadership skills. Plays with a lot of toughness and won't come out when he gets banged up. Isn't afraid to get hit.

• Has already started two years in the SEC.

Negatives:

• Footwork in the pocket needs to improve. Murray will often keep a poor base when the pocket breaks down. Throws off his back foot too often.

• Tends to make poor decisions with the ball. This is where his effort gets him in trouble. Instead of taking a sack or throwing the ball away, Murray will try to make a play and get intercepted on a bad pass.

• Although Murray has solid athleticism, he shouldn't be a quarterback asked to make plays with this feet. He has trouble holding onto the ball and doesn't always know when to slide.

• Will force throws. When Murray gets out of rhythm, he's like a complete different quarterback. He spots the ball poorly, will overthrow and read defenses wrong and throw into coverage. This was evident late in the Outback Bowl last season against Michigan State.

• Will have to continue adding strength to his frame. Looks light in his lower body. His size will always be a point of contention.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
