Mariners Working On No-Hitter Against Dodgers Through 7

The Los Angeles Dodgers have the best record in baseball, but through seven innings against the Seattle Mariners Friday night, they don’t have a hit.

Earlier Friday, Hiroki Kuroda flirted with the idea of no-hitting the Mets. That bid was broken up, but now the Mariners are no-hitting the Dodgers through seven innings of play.

I say "the Mariners" instead of naming an individual pitcher because this has been a combined effort. Kevin Millwood worked the first six innings, but while he was warming up for the seventh, he felt something and was removed after 68 pitches. He was relieved by Charlie Furbush, who retired two batters and committed an error. Stephen Pryor then struck out Juan Rivera to end the seventh.

Millwood had thrown a no-hitter before in his career, in 2003. He threw a two-hit shutout in Colorado against the Rockies this past May.

One should note that the Mariners have yet to score a run. So while the Dodgers are hitless, they’re very much in this game, on effectively equal ground. One should also note that the Mariners’ triple-A affiliate, the Tacoma Rainiers, just took a no-hitter into the eighth before it was broken up. The Rainiers also have yet to score.

Bobby Abreu, Jerry Hairston Jr., and James Loney are due up for the Dodgers in the eighth.
