Hall Of Fame Cemetery: An Immodest Proposal

In which we visit Satchel Paige, Buck O’Neil, and a Hall of Famer who deserves more attention.

A couple of my friends and I have an odd little hobby: When we’re traveling together, we like to locate the graves of Hall of Fame baseball players -- or non-Hall of Famers, if they’re all that’s at hand -- and play a bit of catch.

A few years ago, we were in Kansas City and visited Satchel Paige’s grave. In the same cemetery, just a few hundred yards away, is another Hall of Famer, though far less famous than Paige. When we finally located his headstone, we found a modest marker, half-overgrown with weeds and seemingly neglected for some years.

Recently I was in Kansas City again, and had occasion to return to Forest Hill Cemetery, the home of Satchel Paige’s and that other Hall of Famer’s remains.

The occasion? Since my last visit, Buck O’Neil’s been interred at Forest Hill, too. This time I went with a camera crew, which is how I committed to video my suggestion that the Hall of Fame take special measures and restore some fame to neglected baseball immortals like ... well, check out the video and you’ll see who else we visited. And my thanks to the folks at Forest Hill for all their help during our visit.
