Dodgers Looking At Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins

The fading Los Angeles Dodgers could really use a shortstop.

And with the fading Philadelphia Phillies ... well, fading, they might have a shortstop for sale.

Why, it’s a match made in heaven! Or not. Danny Knobler (via CBSSports.com):

The Dodgers, who are short on prospects but long on both money and needs, have some interest in the Phillies shortstop, sources said Monday.

Rollins is part of a long list of players the Dodgers are looking at, as they try to trade for both a hitter and a starting pitcher in an effort to keep pace with the Giants in the National League West. But he may be the most intriguing.

While Rollins has been a big disappointment with the Phillies this year, he could be a help to a Dodger team that lost shortstop Dee Gordon to the disabled list. Since Gordon went down with a torn ligament in his right thumb, the Dodgers have played Luis Cruz and Juan Uribe at short.

And it’s not like Gordon was helping much, before he got hurt; though he leads the National League with 30 steals, Gordon wasn’t doing anything at all with the bat, and might have lost his job even absent his thumb injury.

Meanwhile, Rollins got off to a slow start this season but has hit brilliantly since the end of May. He would constitute a huge upgrade for the Dodgers, but there’s one big issue: He’s got a three-year contract that’s likely to become a four-year contract, running through 2015. And with Gordon still considered the Dodgers’ Shortstop of the Future, the club would eventually have do something with one of them. Which wouldn’t be impossible, but does throw a spanner into the works.
