Cardinals Double Their Way To A 12-Run Inning

Through the first six innings of their game against the Cubs, the Cardinals had zero runs and five hits. Predictably, they scored 12 runs on 10 hits in the seventh inning nearly batting around twice.

The inning started innocently enough with a David Freese leadoff single followed by Jon Jay popping up a bunt for the first out. Then, St. Louis went crazy. The next six hitters reached base either by a hit or a walk. After Lance Berkman popped out for the second out, it began to rain doubles. Five of the next six St. Louis batters got two-baggers, driving in eight runs in the process.

Freese, Allen Craig and Skip Schumaker each had two hits in the inning with Shumaker going 2-2 with a double, triple and three RBI. In all, the Cardinals ran up 17 at-bats. 10 hits, seven doubles and three walks en route to their 12 runs. Chicago used four different pitchers in the inning with James Russell taking the most damage with six earned runs.
