Ian Desmond is headed to the disabled list after Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson announced that the shortstop had a torn oblique following Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Braves. Desmond has been battling an oblique strain for much of the season, and will get some time off to hopefully recover for good.

Ian Desmond was placed on the disabled list Sunday after an MRI revealed a torn oblique, Nationals manager Davey Johnson announced.

Desmond sat out Sunday’s game after playing 16 innings during Saturday’s doubleheader. He went just 1-for-7 on the day. Desmond is hitting .286 on the year with 17 home runs and 54 RBIs, and was named to is first All-Star Game this past month. There is no word yet just how long the DL stint will last.
