Mariners Demote 1B Justin Smoak To Triple-A

The Seattle Mariners had plenty of moves happening on Monday. After the Ichiro Suzuki trade and loss to the Yankees, the Mariners optioned Justin Smoak to the minor leagues.

It continued to be a momentous day for Seattle Mariners shake-ups well into Monday night. After the Mariners traded future Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees, they weren't finished making roster moves. Following a loss to Suzuki and the Yankees, the Mariners demoted struggling first baseman Justin Smoak.

Shortly after Seattle's 4-1 loss, the Mariners announced that Smoak had been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. Mike Carp will be recalled to replace Smoak, but a second roster move for the vacancy left by Ichiro should be announced on Tuesday.

The Mariners have had high hopes for Smoak, who is still just 25 and could still benefit from a refresher in the minors. Larry Stone of the Seattle Times was able to get this quote from the Mariners’ manager after the announcement:

“I believe in Justin Smoak and believe he’ll be part of this, but we feel this is the right thing for him right now,” Eric Wedge said.

Smoak has scuffled all season and currently holds a slash line of just .191/.255/.323, good for an OPS of .578 and a woeful OPS+ of 64.
