Braves Lose, Chipper Beefs
But their first two batters singled! And Jason Heyward was coming up!
Heyward grounded into a double play, and it was really close at first base and Fredi Gonzalez got kicked out for jawing. After the Braves lost 2-1, Chipper Jones said, "Unfortunately there are a handful or two handfuls of games a year that are decided by the men in black. We didn’t get the call on a pretty obvious call at first base that really cost us a chance to get something going and put some pressure on them. But it’s not surprise to us, shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody else."
Did Chipper have a legitimate beef?
Well, yeah. But it was a really close play:
I’m not sure that any umpire on the planet would get that one right more than, oh, 75 percent of the time. Granted, the tie should go to the runner but umpires aren’t suppose to think like that.
The umpire did miss the call, and the Braves quite probably would have tied or won the game if the umpire had gotten it right. So you can understand Chipper’s frustration. But it was really close.
