Yankees Trade For Pirates’ Casey McGehee

The first-place Yankees made one trade-deadline deal, acquiring corner infielder Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

With Alex Rodriguez out for a while and perhaps Mark Teixeira too, the Yankees were looking for some depth at the corner-infield positions, and Tuesday they added some depth with the acquisition of Pittsburgh's Casey McGehee.

McGehee's just a very small piece of the puzzle for the Yankees, though. After solid 2009 and '10 campaigns with the Brewers, he slumped badly in 2011 and hasn't been good since joining the Pirates for this season. He's just a body, and unlikely to make the Yankees' postseason roster.

McGehee became expendable earlier Tuesday when the Pirates traded for Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez, who might not be in line to platoon at first base with Garrett Jones. In return for McGehee, the Pirates are getting right-handed relief pitcher Chad Qualls.

Qualls is also just a body at this point, with a 5.13 ERA over the last three seasons, and he was about to get dumped by the Yankees because of Joba Chamberlain’s imminent return. But every contender is always looking for bullpen depth, and Qualls fills that bill.
