The San Diego Padres are 44-60, but they’ve gone 25-20 since early in June. There have been a number of reasons for their improved play, but among them has been the performance of young catcher Yasmani Grandal. Grandal was one of the pieces the Padres landed from the Reds in exchange for Mat Latos, and over the first 83 plate appearances of his big-league career, Grandal has posted a 161 OPS+. He’s shown all of his offensive talent and then some, hinting that he could be a long-term slugger in the middle of the order.

Grandal’s not going to play for the Padres for a little while, though. Because he’s been placed on the disabled list with an oblique strain. Grandal strained his oblique while swinging on Monday, and while oblique strains aren’t career-threatening or anything, they are annoying and they do require plenty of rest. If you try to come back too quickly, the oblique strain lets you know and sets you back even further. Grandal won’t push it, and the Padres have no reason to make Grandal push it.

While Grandal’s out, the Padres’ catcher at-bats will be given to less interesting players. Not necessarily less interesting people, but definitely less interesting players. Grandal should be back in a few weeks.
