Cliff Lee's pitching today. He's not winning. Which isn't real surprising, since he never wins. If Lee doesn't win today, that will make 14 starts this season, and zero wins. Anyway, in the sixth inning Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen asked Ron Darling if he'd ever gone though anything like this. After the jump, Darling's response ...

Darling:
I can. In 1987, after Dwight went into Smithers, and then we started to lose pitcher after pitcher after pitcher, I think I went 14 or 15 consecutive games without a decision. And, uh, I will tell ya, I was feeling the heat. It wasn’t that I was pitching particularly poorly, was just that I could not win a game.
I think he merely misspoke. Darling did not go 14 or 15 games without a decision. He did go 14 games without a win.
From April 26 through the 3rd of July, Darling started 14 games and went 0-6 with a 4.76 ERA.
He didn’t pitch particularly well, or well at all. But 1987 was a hitter’s year, and a bit of luck would have gotten Darling at least a few wins. In half of his starts, his Game Score was better than 50 (roughly average).
Coincidentally, if Lee does lose today, he’ll also be 0-6 in his last 14 starts.
