The Dodgers acquired Shane Victorino from the Phillies on Tuesday, upgrading their production and defense in left field. The corresponding move, though, was something of a surprise. According to the Dodgers' official Twitter feed, the team designated outfielder Bobby Abreu for assignment.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are parting ways with Bobby Abreu to make room for new acquisition Shane Victorino.

Abreu came over to the Dodgers on May 4 after he was released by the Los Angeles Angels, and he did okay with the bat, hitting .251/.359/.341, but he fielded like a guy with fire hydrants down his pants because he was stealing fire hydrants from the fire-hydrant store. You might think that's a ridiculous simile, but that's because you didn't watch him field.
The Dodgers will now attempt to deal Abreu, and if they can't work out a deal, they'll release him back into the wild. Considering that Abreu can still put up a decent OBP, someone will probably take a chance on him. He might have been the most underrated player of his generation, but he's basically Kosuke Fukudome now, albeit with more fire hydrants.
