On the day of the non-waiver trading deadline, Scott Podsednik and Matt Albers were traded to the Diamondbacks from the Red Sox for Craig Breslow.

It was a totally routine, minor trade involving bench players and relief pitchers. Happens all the time. Nothing to see here...

Well, except there is something to see here. The Diamondbacks wanted to send Podsednik to the minor leagues. He refused that assignment, as is his right, and became a free agent. Bob Finnan picks up the story:

The Red Sox signed him to a major league deal on Thursday, Fox Sports reported.

Podsednik, 36, never reported to the Diamondbacks, who wanted him to play for Triple-A Reno. When he refused, the team granted him free agency.

Podsednik was actually playing quite well for Boston in a reserve role before the trade, hitting .387/.409/.484 in 70 plate appearances with a home run and six stolen bases. The Red Sox get to keep Breslow, too.
