San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval suffered a left hamstring strain on July 25; it took the Giants three days before placing him on the disabled list, retroactive to that date. Thus he was eligible to come off the DL Thursday, but the Giants are being cautious with him, sending him on a rehab assignment instead. Mike Still:

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval will start a rehabilitation assignment with Class A San Jose beginning Friday. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said Sandoval will likely play two or three games in San Jose before rejoining the Giants.Sandoval has played well this year while he’s been healthy: .299/.352/.491 with eight home runs and 33 RBI in 62 games. This is his second stint on the disabled list in 2012; he also missed more than a month with an injured hamate bone on his left hand that required surgery. The Giants are 6-8 since Sandoval has been out; they still hold first place in the NL West, but will be happy to have him back in the lineup.
