The 2012 Summer Olympics are in the books, but we still have a good few more weeks of ruminating over what was a delectable showing by the United States and dissecting what all this means regarding U.S. dominance of international athleticism. But forget international competition for a minute: Which states racked up the most hardware in London? Which sorry excuses for members of the union went home empty-handed? Find out after the jump!

Let’s go to the map!

Some observations:

- As expected, the coasts dominated, with California and the Eastern seaboard being populated by just all SORTS of little markers. As you move inland, things start to thin out, until you get the the Midwest.

- What’s the deal, Midwest?

- Kansas had two medals, while Missouri had one. This means Kansas gets to lord it over their arch-rivals for another four years. Also, just a brief reminder: There are states that are arch-rivals. So weird, if you think about it.

- Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming walk into a bar. They all just sort of shrug apathetically and order glasses of plain water, no ice. They stay at the bar for like four hours, not talking to anyone.

- Once again, the Dakotas were shut out. Now it looks like they’re dragging Nebraska down with them. Quick, Nebraska! Align yourself with Minnesota instead!

- Arizona won four medals, but they’ll be asked to present their papers before they’re allowed in the state.
