They say that sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make.

The corollary, of course, is that sometimes the worst trades are the ones you do make.

So far, the second of those best describes the Texas Rangers' deadline deal for Ryan Dempster.

Since joining the Rangers, Dempster has started three games and two of them were Disaster Starts.*

* Disaster Start - n. Any start in which a pitcher finishes with more runs allowed than innings pitched and does not get credited with a win.

In his 16 pre-trade starts with the Cubs, Dempster had rung up just one Disaster Start. So, yeah.

And now, this:

If they're personal, they're not really any of our business. And fortunately for the Rangers, Roy Oswalt is perfectly capable of stepping into Dempster's rotation slot and pitching six or seven strong innings. But remember, the Rangers gave up two pretty good prospects for just two or three months of Dempster's services. If he doesn't turn things around down the stretch, it'll be a moderately painful kick in the pants.
