VIDEO: Danica Patrick Falls Victim To Spectator’s Shoe At Montreal NASCAR Race

When the creators of Mario Kart designed their famed racing game, they included red turtle shells, upside-down question marks and banana peels. But they overlooked an important piece of debris that can apparently cripple a race car: A shoe.

At Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Montreal, Danica Patrick ran over a shoe some moron threw on the track while she was leading the race.

Shortly thereafter, a piece broke off her car and she lost her handling. Repairs necessitated some extra time in the pits, and she finished 27th.

Drivers have hit various forms of wildlife on the track and of course pieces of actual debris over the years, but a fan’s shoe is a new one. And as Austin Powers so astutely observed: “Who throws his shoe? Honestly!”

Poor Danica. Her first full NASCAR season has been miserable so far, and even when she’s actually doing well, she runs over some stray footwear.

Whoever threw the sneaker is a real “heel,” because Patrick was a “shoe-in” for a good finish today. (Editor’s note: Yes, those are awful, but we felt the need to include them anyway. We’re not sorry).
