True freshman Perry Hills will be the man at quarterback for Randy Edsall’s Maryland squad when it opens its season, the coach tweeted Tuesday morning:

Hills was slated to be the backup before a season-ending injury to C.J. Brown, but Brown's injury necessitated a battle for the starting gig. Competing were Hills, Rowe -- also a true freshman -- and Burns, who had started out as a QB, was switched to wide receiver last spring and had to return under center following Brown's injury. Hills always had the edge on the job, so the announcement comes as no surprise.
There’s not really much to go on regarding Hills: just a scrimmage Saturday where he apparently impressed. But with the cupboard absolutely bare at the QB spot, the Terrapins will have to hope Hills can guide their depleted roster this season.
It will only be the second time a Maryland freshman has started at QB in their season opener. The other, Calvin McCall -- a redshirt freshman in 1999 -- went 10-for-23 for 100 yards in a 6-0 win. So Hills has nowhere to go but up.
