Matt Garza Shut Down For Season

Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza was supposed to be a hot commodity at the trade deadline, but he left his July 21 start against the Cardinals with a sore arm. The initial diagnosis was a triceps injury, and that was later amended to a stress reaction in his right elbow. Garza was hopeful he'd be back, but the team shut him down for the season.

If the Cubs were 18 games back from a playoff spot, maybe they'd consider rushing Garza back, but at 19 games, forget it. Garza was having something of an up-and-down season, posting another sterling strikeout-to-walk ratio, but allowing more home runs in 103 innings than he did in 198 innings last season.

Garza finishes the 2012 season with a 3.91 ERA. He’ll likely still be the subject of all sorts of trade rumors this off-season.
