    Matt Garza Hits DL With Triceps Injury

    “Nothing major, but he’s not going to be able to go Tuesday,” Sveum said. “He threw two sides, and he was just kind of stiff (Sunday) so we’re just going to back him off and send him home to see the doctor and just be a little more precautionary.“In Garza’s place, the Cubs will recall Brooks Raley, the team’s sixth-round pick in 2009. Raley will make his first major-league start on Tuesday after the 24-year-old left-hander threw 82 innings in Triple-A, with a 3.62 ERA, 69 strikeouts, and 28 walks.

    The Cubs approached the trade deadline with two major pieces to sell in Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza. The expectation was that Dempster would get moved first, and that then the Cubs could focus on trying to arrange a blockbuster. The Dempster sweepstakes haven’t gone as planned, as neither the Braves nor Dodgers have yet been able to reach a deal. And now the Garza sweepstakes has run aground as well. Cubs!

    Garza was removed from his last start with a minor injury, to his triceps. Initially there was optimism that he’d be fine and ready for his next turn, but that optimism has faded.
