Lefthander Randy Wolf had a fine year for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2011, going 13-11 with a 3.69 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. He was a solid piece of the rotation that helped the Brew Crew win the NL Central title, and he started and won a game in the NLCS against the Cardinals.

Fast-forward to 2012: The Brewers are in disarray due to free-agent departures, trades and injuries. And Wolf has had a miserable season; his ERA is two runs higher at 5.69 and he is leading the NL in hits and runs allowed, not categories a starting pitcher would be proud of.

That’s why this comes as little surprise:

Bianchi, a second-round pick of the Royals in 2005, was claimed on waivers in January by the Brewers from the Cubs, a month after the Cubs had made a similar claim on him. This will be Bianchi's third stint with the Brewers this year; he went 0-for-13 the first two times.

The release is oddly timed, in one respect: today is Wolf’s 36th birthday. Some birthday present, Brewers.
