New York Mets lefthander Johan Santana made a comeback from shoulder surgery this year after not having pitched in the major leagues since 2010.

The highlight of his season was a no-hitter thrown against the St. Louis Cardinals June 1, the first no-hitter in Mets history. Santana threw a career-high 134 pitches in that game and some worried about the after-effects of such a high pitch count.

Those fears might have been justified. Santana has an 8.27 ERA and 1.755 WHIP in 20 starts. He also missed some time with an unrelated ankle injury. Thus, this news should not come as any surprise:

Mike Vorkunov of the Newark Star-Ledger indicated the Mets had a plan in place for this possibility:

Hoping to have Santana end his season positively, the Mets were ready to have him pitch again in 2012 but it may not come Thursday. If it doesn’t, there is a contingency plan. Tuesday night, the Mets announced that Collin McHugh will arrive Wednesday as a member of the taxi squad. No official roster moves have yet been announced.
