Devin Mesoraco Demoted To Triple-A

He was a touted prospect at the beginning of the 2012 season, but now the Reds catcher is headed back to the minors.

It has not been a good year for Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, who was a preseason possibility for Rookie of the Year. Instead of the power the Reds hoped for, Mesoraco is hitting just .210/.287/.352 with five home runs and 14 RBI in 52 games. He also bumped an umpire earlier this month, and just finished serving a three-game suspension as a result of that incident.

Now he’s been optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Jack Moore:

The Reds are apparently choosing to stick with catcher Dioner Navarro for now instead, an implication that Mesoraco may not even make the club's playoff roster.

Mesoraco will have to stay down at Triple-A for ten days barring an injury that forces another Red to the disabled list. As such, he won't be on the 25-man roster when playoff eligibility is set at the end of the month, and Navarro therefore will likely be the Reds' backup catcher to Ryan Hanigan as they head for the playoffs.

All of this hasn’t affected the Reds’ play as they are running away with the NL Central, but they appear to want veteran catchers on their postseason roster.
