D’backs TV Announcer Mark Grace On Leave Of Absence

The former All-Star first baseman has been a Diamondbacks broadcaster since 2004, but now he’ll be off the air for a while.

Mark Grace, who played many years for the Chicago Cubs before signing with the Diamondbacks and being part of their 2001 World Series championship team, has been a television commentator for the Arizona team since 2004.

Friday, it was announced that Grace would be off the air for a time:

The broadcast team of the Arizona Diamondbacks continues to change, with the organization announcing Friday that television commentator Mark Grace is taking an indefinite leave of absence to seek "personal assistance."

There’s no word on what this “assistance” would be. This means that the D’backs’ original 2012 broadcast team of Grace and Daron Sutton would both be off the air; Sutton was suspended by the team for insubordination in June.

Here’s who will replace Grace, at least for this weekend:

Former D-back Luis Gonzalez will jump into the analyst's chair for games against the San Diego Padres Friday and Saturday, and legendary broadcaster Joe Garagiola will provide analysis for Sunday's series finale.

Garagiola has appeared on D’backs broadcasts occasionally this season; the former NBC commentator is 86 years old. At two years older than Vin Scully, his former NBC partner, he’d be the oldest currently working baseball broadcaster.
