Pirates Release Erik Bedard

Erik Bedard was supposed to be a mainstay in the Pirates’ rotation this year. Instead, he’s now out of work.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are having their best season in two decades, though their chances at a postseason spot have slipped a bit during a 9-16 August.

That’s why it’s a bit of a surprise -- but not too much, given his awful season -- that the Pirates made a move with one of their starting pitchers:

This is NOT fully confirmed, but I just heard from a long-time, highly reliable source that the Pirates have released starter Erik Bedard. Bedard has given up 16 runs in his past three starts, and the team might be looking to get Kevin Correia back in the rotation.

The confirmation came soon after:

Bedard is having the worst season of his career, with a 5.01 ERA, 76 ERA+, and 14 losses, which lead the National League. The 8.79 ERA he posted during his last three starts (16 earned runs in 14⅓ innings) probably sealed it; as noted above, Kevin Correia probably moves back into the rotation.
