Brett Lawrie Heading To Disabled List

Another Blue Jays player is hitting the DL. This is nearly a weekly occurrence in 2012.

You've heard this one before, right? A Toronto Blue Jays player is going on the disabled list. Ho-hum. Has happened a dozen times or more this season.

Well, you haven’t heard a Brett-Lawrie-to-the-DL story before, but you are going to hear one now, courtesy of Sportsnet Canada:

The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to place Brett Lawrie on the 15 day disabled list to make sure there are no setbacks in his recovery from an oblique injury.

Lawrie suffered the injury last week against the Oakland Athletics after swinging the bat. The 22-year-old Canadian had an MRI on Tuesday and, although he did not suffer a significant injury, there was some inflammation in the rib area.

And this (apparently) didn’t have anything to do with Lawrie’s tumble into the dugout at Yankee Stadium in July. You know you want to see that again, so here it is:

Lawrie was expected to be a stud player for the Jays this year; the results so far are mixed. He’s hitting .282/.326/.416 with nine home runs and 13 stolen bases, which isn’t bad for a 22-year-old player, but the only thing he’s leading his league in is being caught stealing. The DL stint can be backdated to Friday, since Lawrie hasn’t played since then. No corresponding roster move has yet been announced.
