On Wednesday night, St. Louis Cardinals utility infielder Tyler Greene let a ball go through his legs, turning a likely double play into a five-run inning. The Houston Astros saw that and said, "Saaaaay. This guy gets it." So on Thursday the Astros acquired Greene from the Cardinals for a player to be named later or cash.

The 28-year-old Greene has been with the Cardinals for parts of the last four seasons, and he’s a career .218/.295/.329 hitter. He was hitting .218/.272/.358 this season with a career-high four home runs, 179 at-bats, and 56 strikeouts. He saw most of his time at second base this season, but he has experience at every position in the majors except for catcher and pitcher.

Greene was a much better hitter in the minors, with a career .270/.346/.449 line, which includes a .323/.422/.579 demolition of the Pacific Coast League last season. While it’s possible the Astros are thinking Greene has some sort of untapped potential, it’s likely they’re just acquiring him for depth at the major-league level during their rebuilding period.
