The Colorado Rockies will be without catcher Ramon Hernandez the remainder of the season, as an MRI taken Wednesday afternoon revealed a rupture in his left hamstring. Surgery is scheduled for next week to repair the ruptured tendon.

The 36-year-old Hernandez suffered the injury Monday night while running to first base on a ground-rule double. An initial MRI taken on Tuesday was inconclusive, but the follow-up Wednesday officially closed the book on Hernandez’s 2012 season. The injury caps a disappointing year for the veteran catcher, who hit just .217/.247/.353 on the season and missed significant time with tendinitis in his left hand.

Rookie backstop Wilin Rosario, who has emerged as Colorado's catcher of the future, will take a majority of the starts in Hernandez's absence. The 23-year-old is hitting .255/.298/.521 with 24 home runs and 62 RBI in his rookie campaign.

Signed with the Rockies through 2013, the veteran Hernandez is owed $3.2 million next year.
