Damontre Moore 2013 NFL Draft prospect notes
First word: On one of the most aggressive defenses in college football, junior Damontre Moore may be Texas A&M's best pass rusher. Sean Porter gets a lot of credit on the A&M defense, but its Moore who is relentlessly moving forward to get after the quarterback.
Moore has flashed high-round potential, including in the first game of this season. Against Florida, Moore had 10 tackles and three sacks. Moore was getting pressure throughout the game, and required multiple blockers at times. But at other times, he showed that he’s still unrefined by overrunning a play or getting simply knocked to the ground.
After the jump, an early breakdown of the junior defensive end.
Positives:
• The move from linebacker to end was a good one for Moore. He looks more natural with his hand in the ground.
• Displays a good explosion off the line to pop the offensive lineman back and get a leverage advantage.
• Is a relentless player. Even if his first move doesn’t work, Moore keeps after it through the whistle.
• Excels working to the inside, especially on delayed blitzes.
• Does have some versatility after playing the hybrid Joker position for the Aggies in 2011. Lines up on the left and right side.
• Looks to have good natural length and a frame that can handle more bulk to hold up as an NFL end.
Negatives:
• Doesn’t have an array of pass rush moves to fall back on. Mostly uses a bull rush, or a speed rush to the outside.
• In the past, Moore has been criticized by head coach Kevin Sumlin for being inconsistent. Here’s a quote from before the 2012 season started:
“I think the problem with him is kind of a feast or famine deal, that he’s made big plays but has showed the ability to hurt the football team with contain issues, jumping offsides, hasn’t been able to stay (up) ... you look out there and he’s flopping around on the ground. So he’s a guy that we’ve got to corral. He’s got to understand his role and become an every-down player that’s consistent and not just (having) a great play and then we don’t see you, and then a maybe a penalty.”
• The issue with being knocked to the ground is something that happened on a few occasions in A&M’s SEC debut against Florida.
• Despite playing the joker role as a sophomore, Moore has a ways to go in pass coverage. Because of that, he should be projected as a pure end prospect and not a linebacker.
• Suspended a game during 2011 due to a disciplinary issue in the summer.
