Rangers’ Mike Adams out with shoulder injury

Entering Thursday's game against the Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers relief pitcher Mike Adams had given up exactly one home run this season.

Thursday, he gave up three home runs to the Athletics.

Friday, Adams underwent an MRI exam “on his right shoulder and around the trapezius muscle in his neck”. The results haven’t been revealed yet. But as Evan Grant writes,

Adams has already conceded that he won’t pitch in the weekend series against Los Angeles. He left open the possibility of missing the season-ending Oakland series, as well, in an effort to finally get past the “pulling sensation” he feels every time he throws.

And Adams’ availability in the postseason next month seems highly questionable, too.

Fortunately, the Rangers are blessed with a number of outstanding relievers. For Adams' right-handed setup role, Ron Washington can turn to Alexi Ogando and Koji Uehara, who are both sort of ridiculously good. There is a drop-off after those guys, though. So if Adams is out, Washington will be looking for six or seven solid innings from his starters, at which point he can confidently turn things over to his bullpen.
