Royal Delta bounced back from a disappointing effort in the G1-Personal Ensign in her last start to completely dominate the Grade 1 Beldame, winning by almost 10 lengths over It’s Tricky at the wire. It’s Tricky broke cleanly from the gate and went right to the lead and set quick fractions through the first half mile (24.09 and 46.70). At mid-way on the far turn, Royal Delta drew along side her rival under mild encouragement from jockey Mike Smith and then proceeded to run away from the rest of the field in the final quarter mile. It’s Tricky couldn’t keep up and had to settle for second. Long shot Go Unbirdled closed from the back of the pack to finish third.
Beldame 2012 Results: Royal Delta Blows Away It’s Tricky
A pair of early scratches (Disposablepleasure and Acting Happy) reduced the Beldame field to just five fillies and mares. It’s Tricky and Royal Delta took the majority of the action from the players, going to post at odds of 6/5 and 4/5, respectively.
As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series, Royal Delta is guaranteed a spot in the starting gate for the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Challenge on November 2nd.
Royal Delta is a four-year-old daughter of Empire Maker out of an A.P. Indy mare (Delta Princess), trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Mike Smith.
