Ryan Howard injury: Phillies slugger out for season

Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman Ryan Howard will be out for the rest of the season with a broken toe.

Ryan Howard will miss the remainder of the 2012 season after suffering a broken big toe.

Per Todd Zolecki, the hulking lefty suffered the injury when he the pipe he uses in the on-deck circle slipped out of his hands and landed on his foot.

The Philadelphia Phillies powerhouse missed a huge chunk of the campaign while rehabbing from a torn Achilles tendon that he suffered in the 2011 playoffs.

Howard, 32, only suited up for 71 games this season and certainly struggled to regain his form. The first baseman looked like a man still trying to find his groove, ultimately finishing with 14 home runs and 56 RBI while hitting just .219.

The injury isn’t going to cause much of a concern for the franchise, considering the hopes of making the postseason were dashed for good earlier in the week.

Howard's toe is just another issue in the long line of injuries suffered by the Phillies this year, ranging from Roy Halladay and Vance Worley to Chase Utley.

Philadelphia only has five games remaining, closing out the year against the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals.
